Training & Classes

Agility classes are held on Thursday nights from 6pm at Melville Park, Hamilton. We offer 5 levels of classes for all handlers from complete beginner right through to experienced competitors and for dogs of all sizes. Dogs may start training in our Foundation class at the age of 12 months or older. They need to have a very good recall, (come back when called) and be OK working in a highly excitable environment with other dogs nearby.

Terms run for 10 weeks.

Please enrol and pay by the Friday before the class begins. Classes fill up fast and are capped at ten dogs, so If your enrolment remains unpaid at that time, it will be removed and your spot will be offered to the next person on the waitlist. Late enrolments will only be accepted if the instructors agree. Thank you for your support with this.

Also, please ensure you have filled out a membership form before enrolling in a class. One of WAG’s policies, like most other clubs, is that you need to be a member to train with the club. This is to ensure the safety and accountability of everybody involved.

All new members and young dogs must begin in the foundation class. This is to ensure that you and your dog will have the greatest chance of success in your agility journey. If you’re the slightest bit unsure which class to enrol in, please email enrolment@waikatoagility.co.nz and our enrolment coordinator will point you in the right direction.

Basic agility control is taught in the early weeks before moving onto some elementary equipment. A big objective of Foundation class is for dogs and handlers to start forming a strong bond as a team.

We recommend that dogs have mastered some basic level of obedience before beginning agility classes. We can highly recommend our neighbours at Hamilton Dog Obedience Club who are specialists in teaching these skills. You can find them at www.hdoc.org.nz

You can also get in touch with Kool K9 Dog Training for any basic obedience skills. You can find her at www.koolk9.co.nz

  • Class 3: Skills

Improving handling skills and confidence on equipment. By the time dogs leave the Skills class, they will be in a position to start entering agility competitions.
